drift and lee or weather helm are caused by poor trim of the sailing vessel. correct trim is hard to hit due to its many variables. you must take into account the balance of the boat, the center of effort, center of lateral resistance, and the chines (hard or soft chined). usually the reason the rudder is turning is that the vessel is trying to move in a certain direction and the rudder, if left alone, shifts to reduce the created resistance

there is a rope sewn into the luff (fore edge of the sail) called a bolt rope that hold the sail in the sail track. the true definition of a line is not a rope with a job, but one that is connected to a control

we get off subject sometimes and that's what happened there. we've all had that happen to us too, but i give up. there just seems to be no reasoning with you there, prop guy. let me be honest i'm trying to help you help yourself and it's not working. we've all been here a long time and are regulars so to be honest you're asking a lot of the people who (for want of a better word) dominate the threads here to change their ways. if you want a good example look at my thread "international 470 for sale". that is a add thread that i posted for my old boat that also is part of a conversation. turn it into something like that and not just a sales pitch like this is or at least appears to be.

don't mean to say you are, chris, i only skimed the post real quick since i don't have the time to catch up on 2 weeks on missed post and it kind of felt like that at times.

Prop guy, a friendly recomendation: try aproaching the subject like a boater and not like a salesman. I can understand where you are coming from on this but there is a better way about things here

it's a good boat it's just that damn engine that's the problem. it runs great but the parts are a pain and the guys who sold it to us were honest but didn't know much about it. most of the later problems we found you would have found until you really started poking around in the engine.

all the other allmand 35's we could find all had yanmars. this is the only one that had a ducati. it orgiginaly had a dm 284 (1984 2 cylender deisel) and was repowered with the ducati dm 286 which is freshwater cooled. the engine runs great but you can't get parts in the US because the marine section of ducati america no longer exist. also most mechanics don't even know anything about the engine. we're planning on keeping the engine, but once it dies we're not going to bother trying to rebuild it.

we have one we put on a carousel out at seagull for a trainer, but all the ones we sail are latter vanguard built sunfish. we cycle o10 out of our fleet about every year and if it doesn't make a difference to you i would look in to them

May 12, 2008 10:59 am EDT in discussion Alcort Sunfish

out at the camp we have a line that's spliced to the bow ring of all our powerboats (except the joyboy since she is 62 feet) for docking, mooring, and towing. to tow with the use two rings on the transom that are bolted through it. this way even a baby whaler with a 15 can tow a 9 ton cape dory. as for non-professional towing, you should always have a bridle rigged across the transom when towing a single vessel and if your are being towed you need to have some hard fixture on the deck you can fix the line to. this is important if there is an emergency so that the receiving vessel can have a line heaved across her bow in ruff seas when a careful approach is not viable. because of the shoals along the north carolina cost, it is not uncommon to see a vessel with a bow cleat that has been added to the fore deck.

May 12, 2008 10:55 am EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

bye

May 11, 2008 9:34 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

perhaps you should attach it to the same place the anchor secures to

this would be much easier to figure out if i could put my hands on the boat

May 11, 2008 9:29 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

you could run your line over or secure it to the windlass or if it has a bow sprit that supports the anchor to the end of that

May 11, 2008 9:22 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

i'm not, just talking towing in general...i've towed a 9 ton sailing cruiser before as well as several power vessels of various sizes

May 11, 2008 9:21 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

actually on a small boat the best place is the lower mast.

May 11, 2008 9:19 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

had a similar experience with a jy

does your boat have a winlas

May 11, 2008 9:17 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

you won't believe where the hard points on a lot of the small sailboats are these days

May 11, 2008 9:15 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

you still have the force of it being pulled through the ring by the tow

May 11, 2008 9:10 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

that just makes the bow ring act like a pully (however the hell you spell it) and changes the direction of the force acting on the cleat

May 11, 2008 9:08 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

check for hard points that may already be built into the hull, tomm. i've seen some boats that have had them in really odd places and they are there, but the don't have a cleat or anything mounted to them.

May 11, 2008 9:05 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

isn't it spelled the same way? Like what you put on a horse.

May 11, 2008 9:02 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

i agree with rigging a bridal. even if you can tie off to one cleat you can keep both boats better under control when towing with a bridal

May 11, 2008 8:57 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

perhaps you don't have a fixture there but there should be a hard point in the stern some where

May 11, 2008 8:55 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

there is always at least 1 on the bow and 1 on the stern on every production boat out there...you can't really say anything for these little custom jobs you see around sometimes

May 11, 2008 8:27 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

why not go out and buy yourself a couple of over-sized washers or a plate?

and on every boat there are always 2-3 hard points where you could connect a tow line and every owner should make sure to familiarizes themselves with where they are located

May 11, 2008 8:13 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed

in the even of a run away diesel you have to smother it because it is running off it's lube oil, tomm, but you can usualy stop a gas engine by cutting the fuel. what i was wondering was weather or not it also filled the engine to drown any fire or cut the air supply to it

if it's mechanical then it would be the connector cables. if it's electronic it would be the wiring, but there isn't much that could stop one of those. it's also possible that it is just a built in fail safe interfering with the startup. does it just smother the engine or does it also cut the fuel like a diesel shut off does

May 7, 2008 12:06 am EDT in discussion bass boats

you may have a bad cylinoid (i think that is how it's spelled) or a loose connection in the wiring. we had the same problem on our jhonson 130 on our palm beach. i take it that it is a hydrolic lift and if you look on the side of the main cylinder there should be what looks like a large screw. that is the manual release for the piston which will allow you to release the pressure on the piston and move the engine.
