I have recently completed my first novel. It's called Napoleon's Gambit. Before beginning work on the book six years ago, I was attempting a solo-circumnavigation in my catamaran. Managed 14,000 miles, and then was hit by Hurricane Olga while crossing from New York to Bermuda in 2001. I obviously survived and made it to St. George, Bermuda, with the boat more or less intact. But during the 36 hours I was in that storm, I promised my seasick self, that if I made it through this, I was going to give up solo-sailing and sell the boat. And I did - I now write about it, instead of doing it. I do still own a kayak, though, and get to sail on Lake Ontario, on my father-in-law's 40 foot Hunter. So life is still connected to the water, and that's what counts.
