I just heard they are just now getting the rain! Wish em the best!
Well, National Hurricane Center's Track is showing a very straight line for Gustav... Hurricanes don't travel in a straight line over a distance of a thousand miles.. and, look for some changes in the track after Gustav passes over Cuba! Pressure is dropping inside Gustav and that means it is getting it's act together... expect a very strong Hurricane in the morning!

Joe, you're welcome.. And anyone who joined with-in the first year and wants to join Founding Members, just put in a Join Group Request, and I'll accept you! I'll have to find out what the actual One Year Date is, it has never been made really clear to me!
If we get enough names here, I think we can push this one through pretty quick, but we need more names on the thread, especially Founding Members, but not limited to!

I got one.. I was playing with this one for a while...
It's for laptops while stopped in your car. Stop somewhere on the side of the road or a parking lot. It's a holder for your laptop that allows you to put your laptop right in front of you if you are in the drivers seat. It's kinda L shaped and is adjustable and hangs from the steering wheel! Really nice if you have tilt steering, because you can tilt the steering up and really get a good angle!

"Bump and bite" attacks and "sneak" attacks, while less common, result in greater injuries and most fatalities. These types of attack usually involve divers or swimmers in somewhat deeper waters, but occur in nearshore shallows in some areas of the world. "Bump and bite" attacks are characterized by the shark initially circling and often bumping the victim prior to the actual attack. "Sneak" attacks differ in having the strike occur without warning. In both cases, unlike the pattern for "hit and run" attacks, repeat attacks are not uncommon and multiple or sustained bites are the norm. Injuries incurred during this type of attack are usually quite severe, frequently resulting in death. We believe these types of attack are the result of feeding or antagonistic behaviors rather than being cases of mistaken identity. Most shark attacks involving sea disasters, e.g. plane and ship accidents, probably involve "bump and bite" and "sneak" attacks.
Almost any large shark, roughly two meters or longer in total length, is a potential threat to humans. Three species, however, have been repetitively implicated as the primary attackers of man: the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) and bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas). All are cosmopolitan in distribution, reach large sizes, and consume large prey items such as marine mammals, sea turtles, and fishes as normal elements of their diets. These species probably are responsible for a large portion of "bump and bite" and "sneak" attacks. Other species, including the great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran), shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrhynchus), oceanic whitetip (Carcharhinus longimanus), Galapagos (Carcharhinus galapagensis), and certain reef sharks (such as the Caribbean reef shark, (Carcharhinus perezi) have been implicated in these style of attacks. We know less about the offending parties in "hit and run" cases since the shark is seldom observed, but it is safe to assume that a large suite of species might be involved. Evidence from Florida, which has 20-30 of these type attacks per year, suggests that the blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus) [possibly spinner (Carcharhinus brevipinna) and blacknose (Carcharhinus acronotus)] sharks are the major culprits in this region.
Aug 28, 2008 10:19 pm EDT in discussion The Real Statistics...
How, When, & Where Sharks Attack Worldwide there are probably 70-100 shark attacks annually resulting in about 5-15 deaths. We say "probably" because not all shark attacks are reported; our information from Third World countries is especially poor, and in other areas efforts are sometimes made to keep attack quiet for fear of bad publicity. Historically the death rate was much higher than today, but the advent of readily available emergency services and improved medical treatment has greatly reduced the chances of mortality. Actual numbers of shark attacks certainly are going up each decade because of increasing numbers of bathers in the water, but there is no indication that there is any change in the per capita rate of attack.
Most attacks occur in nearshore waters, typically inshore of a sandbar or between sandbars where sharks feed and can become trapped at low tide. Areas with steep dropoffs are also likely attack sites. Sharks congregate there because their natural food items also congregate in these areas.
There are three major kinds of unprovoked shark attacks. By far the most common are "hit and run" attacks. These typically occur in the surf zone with swimmers and surfers the normal targets. The victim seldom sees its attacker and the shark does not return after inflicting a single bite or slash wound. In most instances, these probably are cases of mistaken identity that occur under conditions of poor water visibility and a harsh physical environment (breaking surf and strong wash/current conditions). A feeding shark in this habitat must make quick decisions and rapid movements to capture its traditional food items. When these difficult physical conditions are considered in conjunction with provocative human appearance and activities associated with aquatic recreation (splashing, shiny jewelry, contrasting colored swimsuits, contrasting tanning, especially involving the soles of the feet), it is not surprising that sharks might occasionally misinterpret a human for its normal prey. We suspect that, upon biting, the shark quickly realizes that the human is a foreign object, or that it is too large, and immediately releases the victim and does not return. Some of these attacks could also be related to social behaviors unrelated to feeding, such as dominance behaviors seen in many land animals. Injuries to "hit and run" victims are usually confined to relatively small lacerations, often on the leg below the knee, and are seldom life-threatening.

Shark Attack and Fatalities in Florida...
After talkin on this subject and recently becoming a Scuba DIver, I thought I would do some investigating and find out what the real numbers are when it comes to Sharks!
To say the least, I was very surprised at the large number of attacks, the species responsible, and the type of attack. This is very informative data, and you won't find anything more revealing than these links when lookin for the facts!
I'm not posting these to scare people of Sharks, but to educate so as to know what and what not to do in the water. I have learned much myself. My high contrast swim trunks are a big mistake! Take it for what it is worth, but I'm sure you will find this interesting!

The tailor was a bit suprised by this, and said, "Excuse me, I don't mean to pry, but since white is the color traditionally worn by a virgin on her wedding night, I can't help wondering if you might still be a virgin? How could that be?"
The woman replied, "I'm sorry to say, but that's the way it is. You see, my first husband was a psychologist. He just wanted to talk about it. My second husband was a gynecologist. He just wanted to look. My third husband was a stamp collector. God, I miss him..."

The Charter thing.. I talked to one Divemaster who does it, but it's not about the money so much as just having a great time with other people and having all your expenses covered and some change in your pocket!
I've got to figure out how to set my boat up so boarding it after a dive is not difficult. Right now it's hard as hell to get back in with swimming trunks on.. LOL! You're talkin 50-60 lbs on your back, and add the rockin motion from the current, it's not easy on the dive boats with hand rails and nice wide steps! I'll probably put dive ladder/steps on the Transom and take my dive gear off in the water. It's easy enough to do! Just have to make sure your BCD is inflated so your gear don't go straight to the bottom when you take it off.. LMAO! or it doesn't float away with the current! Even with a dive ladder, I can't see climbing in my boat with gear on! I think I'll rig up a line with quick release hooks that hang over the boat, and just clip them on the BCD, then all should be good!

We dove twice this morning and I could have stayed down there forever, it's hard to explain.. but on land we live in 2 dimensions, in water you live in three dimension because you have the ability to raise up and down with just your breath. Let me explain.. If I'm swimming along the bottom and I come to a rock or wall of rock, I just take a deep breath and up I go over the wall or rock.. so freakin cool! Then to come back down, I just exhale deeply and back down I go..
You're gonna love it Darrin, once you get down there..
I'll tell you.. having a boat is a big plus. I've got many offers to go out diving for that fact. Someone at the dive center said, I've got all the tanks and air if you got the boat.. LOL! Now that sounds like a 5 tank dive day... LMAO!
Good luck man.. and let me know when you start your cert process.. if you have any questions, just ask!

Aug 22, 2008 7:47 am EDT in discussion BCD's and Suits..
WOW... I've just been reading on Nitrox (enriched oxygen air), not something to take lightly. If you exceed the dive depth limits with Nitrox... the bends aren't the problem.. you get oxygen toxicity which without any symptoms.. you go into convulsions under water and it's almost a guaranteed death. No way to keep your regulator in your mouth while in convulsions!

Gonna call it a night guys.. catch ya in the morning.. got to hit the book!
Aug 21, 2008 8:57 pm EDT in discussion Tropical Storm Fay
It is an experience that you can't forget. There are no basements here, the water tables are just a few feet below the surface, and also it's all coral rock underneath. So you just hope for the best when the wind starts! I've only been scared once during a hurricane, and the wind was so strong like you describe, you could feel and hear the pressure on the house. It felt like any minute it would just blow apart!
Aug 21, 2008 8:43 pm EDT in discussion Tropical Storm Fay
In 2005, those same trees and bushes were either stripped out of the ground or stripped bare of leaves the wind was blowing so hard. The white fence.. you could see bending back and forth.. and a noise that sounds kinda like a train roar... I guess I've gotten use to the storms!
Aug 21, 2008 8:27 pm EDT in discussion Tropical Storm Fay
I'm reading my Nitrox book tonight and tomorrow... this stuff can be really dangerous if you missuse it! But, like diving with air, if you follow the rules.. it's a wonderful thing!

An older woman will never wake you up in the middle of the night and ask you, "What are you thinking?" An older woman doesn't care what you think, if you think at all.
An older woman is a cheaper date. A younger woman will cost you 12 beers, but an older woman will sleep with you after a cup of a herbal tea.
The older a woman gets, the stronger her libido gets and the older a man gets, the weaker his libido gets... which is why nature intended young guys to go out with older women and young women to go out with older men.
Older women have jobs with dental plans. Younger women can't help you when your teeth get knocked out playing hockey.
An older woman will never accuse you of "using her." She's using you.
An older woman will introduce you to all of her girlfriends. A younger woman will avoid her girlfriends when she's with you, in case you get any ideas.
An older woman will always meet the minimum height requirement to go on an amusement ride.
An older man approached an attractive younger woman at a shopping mall.
"Excuse me; I can't seem to find my wife. Can you talk to me for a couple of minutes?"
The woman, feeling a bit of compassion for the old fellow, said, "Of course, sir. Do you know where your wife might be?"
"I have no idea, but every time I talk to a woman with tits like yours, she seems to appear out of nowhere."

We're getting almost no rain or wind so far here in Key West, we have had a few small rain bands that came through last night, but is mostly cloudy and calm to this point. Looking at Miami an Ft Lauderdale it looks like they are getting much more rain at this point!
I predict Fay to already be a Hurricane category 1 level when she crosses Key West later this evening and to be heading NE at that point! Still more East than the NHC is predicting! But we will see.. Hope everyone is safe and all of us in South Florida comes out of this with nothing more than a terrible hang-over... Cheers Mateys!

More west would be good, it would miss us and and we would get some wind and rain! But the longer it stays out in the Gulf, the stronger it will get in the warm water, so I'm not so sure that is good for you!
Even once it crosses Cuba, it will instantly start to get stronger in the warm water and lack on land! There is a high pressure ridge to the West, and a high pressure ridge to the East, and this thing has no where to go but straight up..!!
Look for the Florida Outline in the pic..

Earlier today the projected track was shifted more west by National Hurricane Center, and The Weather Channel followed suit. But, since then things have changed and lookin at all the data.. this thing is going to be more East like originally suggested. I'm waiting for the 11:00pm advisory by the NHC to see if they also change the track back. I think SW Florida may get a good piece of this...

They already called a mandatory evacuation for tourists here! Residents will be next. Business will die for two weeks now, and slowly pick up after then. This is the best case sernario! I am an optomist.. LOL Our hisghest ground level here is 18 feet, and most are somewhere around 10 feet.. lol! I may need that Scuba Gear is right!
Thanks Jerry..
The Hurricane parties are so cool, go to a bar, only a few stay open, and drink for free with all and nothing but locals, while the wind and water are blowing on ya, and in some case we were sitting in 2 feet of water still drinin.. :-)

I've got to cram the Nitrox book this morning.. so I can get that cert also this weekend. I'm pushin it now.. got some formulas and new tables to learn.
LMAO.. I didn't even take my camera, I had so much stuff to deal with. My brand new mask broke just as I was putting it on walkin to the back of the boat on my first open water dive. I thought it wa over, but one of the crew leant me a mask! I had an extra strap for it, thought I was prepared, but the way it broke you couldn't get anything attached to it. Oh well, got through that. I've got a whole nother mask at home that should have been in my bag. I'll never go diving without two complete mask again!
My instructor is married, but really cool chic! A blast to dive with and she knows the Aquadic Life on the bottom! She even let me borrow her Nitrox Book so I didn't have to buy one for a day! Infact, I had a great time and talked to almost everyone on the dive boat at one point or another... LOL! The whole crew were great. Hell, we even had beer on the dive boat coming back after the last dive.. :-)

These are the most dangerous hurricanes for us in the Keys. Reason is, because you can't tell what they are going to do until they cross over Cuba (they always straigthen after they cross over Cuba, but how much is what is important), which only leaves us about 10-12 hours to warning. If it turns into a 3 or 4 category when it hits the warm water of the Gulf Stream after it crosses over Cuba, we only have hours to to get out and it is almost to late at that point! These are the worst and potentially the most dangerous!

No Charlie.. it's what comes with the chat room that theboaters.com doesn't want. Too much bullsh*t. I'm not sure how much it would be used, if you go to other boating sites, and go to their chat rooms, it's not being used except for a couple lonely guys waiting for their next victim.. LOL!

Well, morning pool dive is over with.. :-) What a great experience! I did so well in class this morning I got to set up everyones BCD's before our pool dive.. LOL! That'll teach me! But, I'm also getting Nitrox certified this weekend. They gave me a deal, less than a hundred dollars more and all in the same dives, so I'll still be done tomorrow! I''m as happy as a bug in a rug.
DIve Instuctor.. on a scale of 1-10... she's rockin the 9's :-P I'm her dive buddy in the class!
It's lunch time and then out to open water, this is going to be so cool! Hope eveyone is having a great weekend!
