wendy, are you asking how far the compass should be from the electronics ?

if you really wanna get anal about it there are many different things that should be taken into consideration, materials boat made from....type of compass...etc...

the owners manuel should be able to tell you the minimum distances and maximum wire runs, how to calibrate, etc....are you guys doing the install yourself ?

Ken, you dont carry a 12' length of sash chain ?? go to home depot, and buy your self a piece....its chain, but it wont kink and is as flexible as string....a magnet connected at the end and your in business......can be a bit aggravating with metal studs, but a little practice and youll be in business......

unless your nutdriver is stainless you wont have any problem retrieving it !

add into the mix a retractable magnetic parts grabber and you can shimmy and shake most anything out of anywhere !

good story about the sunscreen Stacey ! when i was in France, i got ahold of a bottle that was out of date.....i used alot of it, but instead of protecting from the sun it actually worked more like a bronzer.....second worst burn ive ever had ! before i realized it wasnt working it was too late and i was burnt to a crisp :(

ever since ive been kind of funny about buying a new bottle everytime i go out....i get the smaller bottles and always grab one from the back of the shelf....and always check the date !!

worst thing i think you can do is stop at the last minute on the way to the lake and grab a dusty bottle of sunscreen off the shelf at the local gas station...................lol

well its not finished yet.....still need to add a shark, some rope work, nautical stars, and the classic "poison" chick and cross bones....and then get everything colored !

Gene is doing the first stages, and his wife is going to do the poison chick, they just moved up here from Atlanta, and have settled in nicely at a new parlor here in town.....Evolution Ink And Arts (art for life !) lol kind of a high end place, but im commfy with gene and the folks running the show.....good folks !

theres a few "famous" artists around town here.....been in all the rags blah blah blah.....but Gene is my kind of people, and his work is first class, so im his pin cushion till he fucks up !!...lmao !

i think over the next few months im going to end up sleeving my entire arm in classic nautical tats....i may have posted that in an earlier thread, long day, brain fried.....lol..........but one thing for sure....im having all the outlines and shading done first, then sitting down for the coloring of everything over a weekend or so............whole arm will be bright and fresh !

lol, forgot to mention, Gene has been tattooing for 27 years, so i think im in good hands....

although, theres a part of me that wants to have several different artists work on the arm....for that subtle difference in design sort of thing.........i dunno, we'll see

are you going to color it in, or leave it in outlines ?

the problem being in water with current.....and im going out on a limb to explain this, but to the best of my knowledge.....isnt so much creating a ground with yourself, but its the fact that 120 volts runs at around 60hertz, and thats the same frequency as the human heart.....so basicaly what happens is that your body doesnt short so much as it short circuts internaly....you basicaly have a heart atack and drown.....

they have no choice but to move forward and implement the act.... its the law, and their hands are tied as far as it goes.....they have voiced themselves that its not a good idea, they are basicaly forced to put it into effect by the deadline or they are in violation of federal law.

unless congress puts the brakes on the issue, it will be a done deal come october, and then it will be next to impossible to reverse until the time frame has run out.....

ive sent 10 or so emails to my state reps and responded to every "click here to vote no" link on every website that has one......but rest assured there is someone somewhere looking to make alot of money if this passes, thats just how the world works around these waters.....

besides....just think of the instant revenue it will generate for stupid shit....like say, homeland security, im betting my money on the fact congress has figured out that boaters can foot the bill for alot of pork up on capitol hill !.........and i bet you this also.....there will be some very little known about exemptiion that the bi wigs will have in place because damn "that wasnt ment for their boats !"

how do you figure it went so far so fast off course...its a thread about pirates and a small discussion about boat arms insued......you know, those things you may use to protect yourself from pirates ?

and i feel sorry for you Tomm.....i hear even your olympic shooting team has to go to New Zealand to practice.......what a shame.....why dont you give us some crime stats since the ban......wasnt there a 400% increase in edged weapons attacks or something like that ??

another thing in "praise" of wheel guns......never had one jamb up on me, never heard of one jambing.... and anyone who needs more then six rounds either needs to learn how to shoot, or has gotten themselves into something they dont need to be in ! at the very least they have choosen the wrong weapon for the circumstance !

Jun 13, 2008 4:11 pm EDT in discussion Pirate Reports and Stories...

i use to have around 20.....and yes, expensive as hell ! we just had a gun&knife show here last weekend, i just found out that the little marlin camp carbine (45acp) (same clip as a 911) is going for close to 500 bucks !......i bought it new at this same show maybe 15-20 years ago for 200 bucks ...............i wish now i had kept everything over the years i "collected" and then sold off/traded. the browning is selling wholesale these days for around 500, lol, i paid 150 bucks for it from a GI going overseas a few years back ! the ruger i paid retail for...but let me tell ya, that is one sweet good feeling pistol in your hand.....and it never dawned on me that its stainless...perfect for the boat !!

have you seen the "rat shot" loads for a 357 ?...well, they come in several calibers.....like a little mini shotgun shell....another good thing for close quarters boat use i think.......im thinking first three rounds rat shot....then last three penetrating rounds in case i need to get thrue a bulkhead or something.....

Five pirates and one woman wash up on a desert island after a shipwreck. Before long they are all getting pretty horny so they all make a deal. Each pirate will marry the woman for one week at a time, at which point the next pirate in line will marry her and so on. All the pirates get sex every five weeks and the woman gets sex as often as she wants with a different pirate each week. The situation works wonderfully for five years. When the woman suddenly dies... The first week after wasn't too bad. The second week was getting sort of bad. The third week was getting pretty bad. The fourth week was really bad. The fifth week was horrible! By the sixth week it was unbearable...

So they buried her.

Jun 11, 2008 3:01 pm EDT in discussion Post Your On The Water Humor Here!

not counting lube oils and filters..... ide have to say starter, alt, lengths of wire in different sizes to make jumpers/bridges, belts, thermostat, impeller, maybe a whole RWP if you have the room, bulkhead plugs, 3 pound shot hammer, tools of course, plenty of tape(all sizes/styles), fuses, replacement switches/breakers, and on and on and on.........

i know alot dont have alot of room, and weight is a concern, but ide rather have what i need and loose a few hundred feet per gallon then loose a whole weekend cause i lost an impeller or fried a starter......

of course, i think the areas you boat in have alot to do with it also....my partial list is for cruising, if i was bobbing around on a lake somewhere, i wouldnt worry with the spare parts so much, maybe just impellers and belts, and leave the big parts in the dock box or back of tow vehichle....

Boat explodes at marina

The Associated Press ADVERTISEMENT

CHARLOTTE — A boat with five people aboard exploded Tuesday at a Lake Norman marina north of Charlotte and one person was missing.

The Charlotte Observer reported that an 80-foot charter boat exploded at Westport Marina on the southern end of Lake Norman in eastern Lincoln County shortly after 4 p.m.

The explosion damaged the back of the Championship II. The boat is operated by Championship Yacht Charters.

Owner Cliff Champion said the boat had just returned from a graduation party cruise and nearly everyone was off the boat. The five still aboard were Champion, the father of the graduate and three crew members. One of the crew members is missing.

Jun 5, 2008 8:11 pm EDT in discussion ocasionally i can get on

never shot to wound...shot to kill.....not that you may actually kill them......but never shot someone in the arm or leg to "stop" them......your not doing anyone any favors....ESPECIALLY YOURSELF !!!.....and especially here in the states !

if it comes to a point you feel the need to pull out a firearm....or most any other weapon.....you need to be prepared for the consequences....both emotionaly and politicaly !

the most important thing to remember is......you need to be in fear for your own life or lives of those with you in order to justify deadly force...except in Texas (i love texas)......dont shoot someone because you catch him stealing your outboard of the dingy, or if he is retreating from you after brandishing deadly force and theres any chance of witnesses......

heres an old saying to chew on......its better to be tried by 12....then carried by 6 !

now, with all that said....everyone and every possible circumstance is as different as night and day.... everyone has got to be responsible for their own actions and the decisions they make.....theres no easy answer to this question about onboard security......hopefully i didnt "flame on" too many of the voyurs out there reading this....but please, if i did feel free to jump up and join the discussion !

Jun 5, 2008 8:10 pm EDT in discussion Pirate Reports and Stories...

i agree with the finish em off idea.....the only thing that would upset me more then killing someone would be to wound them and end up paying them off the rest of my life....

im thinking also, if im at anchor in some foriegn waters......and i end up killing a "pirate" and there are others who escape the scene, im hauling ass to the nearest international waters !!!

ya gotta admit....it'll make a hell of a war story to all your drinking buddies.......plus im thinking it will keep my ass out of some hell hole prison that theres no "escape" from........if i get rousted by some crooked political system im going to at least make them earn their money on the chase !!

lol, i was getting "mildly" gassed for about a half hour everytime i opened the door to let the next group in.....

lol, we did the chamber a few days after flu shots and yes....you havent lived until youve watched the flhegm leaving 40 or so chocking, hacking men....aahhh the good ol' days ! lol

i also like the idea of lacing a couple door mats with carpet tacks, or roofing nails (large square heads) for putting out at night in the cockpit in front of the companionway.....just dont forget the next morning and ruin your day ! especially after they start to rust !

this is the 25mm to 38 caliber sleeve....recommended to be used in the newer military style steel flare guns, but the standard marine plastic will hold up just fine for an emergency use

and this baby is the 12guage sleeve for a 25mm flare gun....sweeeeet, but ya better be hanging on when you pull that trigger !

you can go to the website www.captainforhire.com and click on products to see all the different ones they offer..... or just google "pirates plague"

Jun 5, 2008 12:03 pm EDT in discussion Pirate Reports and Stories...

i read once of a system for blue water cruisers that was like a halon system for the cockpit.....

if your asleep onboard and awakened in the night by strange noises, you can give a shout to get off (assuming youve locked the cabin door) and hope they leave....if they dont, you simply hit the "panic button" and the cockpit is filled with a thick cloud of cs gas (pepper spray) via nozzles mounted into the gunwales and possibly a hard top overhead (like with express models) (very james bondish, i like :) )

.....and my personal favorite....there is an aluminum insert for 12guage and 25mm flare guns that will allow you to fire 38 caliber rounds from said flare gun....... everyone has a flare gun onboard, or should if venturing offshore, and i dont think customs would look twice at one.......and im sure its alot easier to "hide" a plain looking insert amongst the tools, or in a "junk drawer".....or even in plain view if disguised as maybe a piece of kitchenware or something....

its a one shot "better make it count" weapon, but in a pinch it may be the very thing that saves a life (your life) in adverese conditions...

ill find a pic and post shortly.....

Jun 5, 2008 11:42 am EDT in discussion Pirate Reports and Stories...

i wonder if Stacey stores her ammo in the freezer ?? hhmmmmm......

Jun 4, 2008 11:30 pm EDT in discussion Pirate Reports and Stories...

so we dont get bogged down with anchors.....

whenever your likely to be moving everyday, keep the anchor rode stowed on deck to keep the mess out of the anchor locker..... coil it on the foredeck and cover it with a small trap, or put it into a canvas bag to keep sun exposure to a minimum..... to keep the clutter off the deck completely, put up two stainless steel life-ring brackets to coil the line around..... when there is no rocky bottom that needs the use of chain rode, take off the chain portion to avoid the demudding it will need..... connect two scrub brushes bristle to bristle, as the chain comes up, use the brushes to clean off mud and goop.....then only clean chain will go into the anchor locker......

Jun 2, 2008 5:13 pm EDT in discussion How close is too close?

wow...i have to agree Capt Robb.... if theirs plenty of room and nice conditions i dont see any need or reason to pile right up on someone else.. lol, hell, my main reason for getting out there is to get away from everyone else ! if theres room, ide say 50 yards minimum (100 would be great !).....and if its a nice quiet cove somewhere with limited space, i might intruduce myself and see if wede be compatable neighbors (kids/reason for being there/etc...) if not, then i leave since they beat me to it ! if im there first, and they insist on cramming up next to me, i hope they like ghetto rap and my shiney naked ass crunking on the deck in their direction......lmao, i dont think they would stay long after that !

just do it is good for selling sneakers, and catchy t-shirt designs......but with todays economy like it is, it might be more prudent to just plan ahead and research it..... if he is looking for a position in the civilian design market, i think his options are going to be very limited....just take a look at brunswick for example, 6 complete lines 86'd and entire plants closing down...not a good place to look for entry level positions.....and its just going to get worse i believe before it gets better

if i were you ide look into defense contractors, US Navy and Marine Corp, to be exact, and try to get your foot in the door there if you really want to be involved in a naval architecture/design field

i thought it might be time for some good downhome boatkeeping tips and tricks.....give each other a chance to share little tidbits weve picked up over the years that make life afloat a little, or even alot more special :)

heres my first submission to coinside with the summer "picnicing season"

Straw paper plate holders, especially those with a natural "finish" have many surfaces that can trap moisture and spills, wich we all know will grow mildew and attract bugs.... clean them real good with a mixture of baking soda and water, dry completely and spraypaint them with a gloss enamel to match your galley colors.......

the new painted surface wont soak up moisture, wont mildew, and wont attract bugs

screw that...... tie him down naked out in the sun.....and then take a razor and cut little slits all over his body.....spray him down with rubbing alcohol and rub in some sea salt.......after he stops screaming, pour honey all over his nuts and dump out a handful of red ants......then just simply walk away......

May 31, 2008 9:39 pm EDT in discussion State of Mind

i can totaly grasp the concept of "winter" boating......here in north carolina our winters are very short compared to alot of you guys out there, really cold weather is only about 2 months long, but it is nice being a true 4 season state with mild winters !

i plan on boating year round around here, the use of a cabin heater will all but cancel out any cold we have, and ill have the river all to myself except for the water rats every now and then :)

youve got to be kidding me......

May 31, 2008 9:10 pm EDT in discussion Joighfoef

John.....my marinette is more of a pleasure craft, hence the painted hull sides....lol, trust me, if a year from now she still shines like that, i'll buy you a case of beer !! aluminum oxidation is a funny great thing....it will oxidize to a certain point, then the oxidation will protect the aluminum from further "attack"....only drawback is that shiney exterior will dull a bit....

stainless steel does the same thing....but with stainless the layer of oxidation is so microthin you cant see it....thats why stainless stays shiney and rust free for long periods of time !

May 29, 2008 6:54 pm EDT in discussion Once upon a time... (the story of a forum gone mad)

well hold on now.... first off, were not an old bunch of yentas that sit around and gossip.....the only people we talk about on there....that arent there, are you and frank....frank actually has a fan club....you not so much.....

the "need" for skype is nothing more then a way to sit and chat in the evenings without clogging up the forums with too much mindless dribble...of course, youve got that covered for us, with your 5000 plus posts or whatever the number is up to now...

i think its amazing that you knew exactly who it was and what they were doing last night....i dont think you know what you think you know......

i can tell you this ....lol, the only reason anyone has wanted you on skype is to hear you say "daves not here"....cause you sound just like cheech & chong.....thats all, nothing more, nothing less

im curious....if we were all chatting over a conference call in the evenings, would you be on here screaming ATT....ATT.....ATT ?? probably not, please dont try to castrate our choosen form of chat in the publics eye here just because you didnt fit in.....you have a very bad habit of making very personal attacks towards people, and yes, it has made you a target for ridicule at times......maybe if you treat this place for what it is, and not like your own personal social experiment you might find you would get more responses when your looking for sympathy from others......dont forget, theres 19,000 other people who didnt wish you well either........

maybe if you made a public apology to some of those who you have attacked in the recent past (not me, i could care less) you might find that attitudes towards you change for the better.....maybe they wont....but you never know........give it a try.....

and now, just for a little taste of some fuzzy bunny ninja stuff......we know who sent you the pic, we knew before you did, .......lmao, no one is trying to fool anyone.......

i know what your going thrue man....your desperatly trying to secure the alpha male position around here, maybe you will, just dont hold your breath and self destruct when it doesnt happen.......
