Here's one
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (AP) -- Robbers armed with machetes hacked a U.S. tourist to death and seriously wounded his wife in an attack aboard the couple's sailboat in northeastern Guatemala, the woman told The Associated Press.
In a telephone interview Sunday from her hospital bed, Nancy Dryden, 67, said her husband, Daniel Perry Dryden, 66, was killed by four men who boarded their boat late Saturday while it was anchored in Lake Izabal.
"They poked us and stabbed us with the machetes, and they were asking for money, specifically dollars," said Dryden, who was listed in stable condition at a hospital in the lakeside town of Morales.
The thieves were apparently unhappy with the take. "We had a few quetzales [Guatemala's currency], but we had no dollars with us on the boat," Dryden recounted.
The Drydens, who are retired and live near Anchorage, Alaska, had bought the boat in February. They were equipping the vessel in preparation for a voyage into the Caribbean and eventually to the eastern coast of the United States.
Dryden said the four assailants may have reached the boat by swimming from shore and brandished long machetes that "seemed liked curved swords."
After assaulting the couple, the men demanded she hand over the keys to the vessel, which has an auxiliary motor. When she didn't -- she was unable to tell whether they wanted the keys to the boat, or a small dinghy the couple used to get to shore -- the men left, also apparently by swimming.
Dryden struggled over to the boat's radio and sent out a distress call. "I said we need help. ... I said my husband was not moving," Dryden recalled.
She said she expects her children to arrive in Guatemala on Monday and plans to be transferred to the United States for medical care.
Assistant Police Commissioner Luis Say said the attack is under investigation.
Lake Izabal, near Guatemala's Caribbean coast, is popular among tourists for its jungle scenery and wildlife.
In March, protesting farmers briefly kidnapped four Belgian tourists at Lake Izabal to press for the release of a jailed activist. They were released unharmed

Hey Ken,
Sorry to hear about the diabetes. I didn't read the whole thread so I may be missing some information but just thought I'd let you know I'm type 2 diabetic myself and honestly, after you learn to change your lifestyle a bit, it's no big deal. After I found out (about 3 years ago) I made some drastic changes in my eating and drinking habits, got a little more exercise and as it turns out I felt better than I had in 10 years! Anyhow hope all works out and if you're looking for info...just ask.

It's obviously very true that fuel prices have gone through the roof this season, but if you are brave enough to look at the overall cost of boating, the increase in fuel represents only a small percentage increase in the cost of boating in general. No question it hurts, but it won't stop me from getting on the water every chance I get.

Anchor cleat is a good idea but would not work in all cases due to lack there of or accessibility. Some are buried in the anchor locker (especially if you have a windlass). As for private towing I suspect there is more of that done than seatow etc. It's a common courtesy to help fellow boaters in need...provided it does not put you and your vessel in danger.

May 11, 2008 9:30 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed
Why wouldn't you just abandon the small sailboat :)
May 11, 2008 9:20 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed
Quite honestly Frank, I'm not sure I would care where they are on a small sailboat. A small sailboat isn't going to be doing any towing and if it is being towed I suspect the cleats on it would be strong enough for the weight of the boat.
May 11, 2008 9:17 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed
My wife can swim :) just kidding!
May 11, 2008 9:11 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed
It keeps the tension and stress on the bow ring and not the cleat.
May 11, 2008 9:09 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed
As for being towed...what about looping the tow line through the bow eye a couple of times and then tying the bitter end to a bow cleat. Just a thought? THat way a quick release is possible and safe
May 11, 2008 9:06 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed
Point well taken Tomm, Obviously the stronger the cleat, the better.
May 11, 2008 9:04 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed
Yeah bridle ..that's the word I was looking for
May 11, 2008 9:02 pm EDT in discussion Towing & Being Towed
Tom, Tomm you guys are correct. There is only one good place to be towed from and that is the trailer hook on the bow of the boat under the rub rail. Assuming we are talking about 40' and under. Towing is another story. I have towed boats in before and do so by running a line between my stern cleats and rigging another line to that one...creating a Y shaped rig. This helps distribute the load between the cleats. Also makes adjusting line length easy.

I can see maybe the trawler if it travels long distance, but not a pontoon boat. Carrying extra fuel on a boat is dangerous, but sometimes necessary. I for one wouldn't do it unless I had a very good reason.
May 11, 2008 8:39 am EDT in discussion How Good are Your Re-fuelling Procedures?
Tom, were they sailboats? I understand that some long distance boaters carry an extra can of fuel. Kinda like a reserve tank on a motorcycle.

I've had both a single sterndrive and twin drives. No question the twins are easier to handle in close quarters, but I would not spend the money to but a bow thruster on a single sterndrive boat. Have to agree with Rick, better to spend the $7000.00 and upgrade to a twin engine boat. That way you get presumably the added bonus of a few extra luxuries along with the extra control from the second drive.

If your boat has outdrives electrolysis corrosion can destroy them in a matter of months if not dealt with properly. It is something to take very seriously. Sacrificial zincs are the most common method of "blocking" corrosion in my part of the world. These zincs attract the stray electrical current in the water faster than the metal on your drives or other underwater metals on your boat. There are also anode systems that counter act the electrolysis.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your input. We understand and agree that a load of rock would 1. support the wall and 2. prevent boats from sterning in too close to the wall and 3. deflect any propwash. In our geographical area we have many many companies capable and willing to do so. Unfortunately our harbour is heading on 50 years old. The wells are too small to begin with and adding the rock would require an extension of the wells which is not possible due to the already confined maneuvering space available. We really have no choice but to disallow stern in docking. We have some members that are fighting the rule and I was hoping to see if other Clubs/Marinas had similar rules. There are several in our area that also do not allow sterning in, but I wondered what the rest of the world did. I appreciate everyone's input.
Thanks

Walls are metal and finger docks are long enough that bowing in shouldn't pose a problem as far as boarding the boat. In most case our docks are longer or at least as long as the boats in them. Thanks for you input Chris.
Apr 17, 2008 5:35 pm EDT in discussion Harbour rules - "No Sterning In"
Ok Folks, I'm looking for some serious ( or as serious as you can be) input here. We have a new harbour rule at our Yacht Club this year. Boats are no longer allowed to stern in against seawalls. I am told that an engineer's report has determined that the prop wash caused by sterning in is causing undermining of the harbour bottom at the base of the seawall and thereby causing the seawall to cave in. ( Bunch of engineering crap that I can detail for you if you wish.) To the point... What are the rules in other harbours about allowing power boats to stern in against seawalls?
