For many many years my dream boat was a 35 ft Searay...a older one to boot..always said that would be it...i would buy it and never want another one...well i went and found a 38 Silverton..and i love it...much more then the 35 Searay dreamboat....i've had it for a year and now i already want a bigger one...i can't afford the damn gas on teh one i have and i'm seriously going to be going to a 50 ft Searay...when does it end??

any austrlaian boaters out there that know some party coves?
Feb 12, 2008 8:08 am EST in discussion Best party ports
My lesson of 2007 was "drift"...my buddy was at the helm on my boat and i was right beside him. The wind was blowing from the port side....He was following the markers and the chartplotter and we were driving thru one set of markers straight to the next...depthsounder alarm rang and we went from 22 knots to 0 quicker then i thought possible...my boat has a 3 1/2 foot draft and we were in 2 feet of water..it was hell...both props were completely burried...I couldn't believe it...I thought they were torn off until i went under and felt the top of one of them. Lesson: Even if it looks like you are heading in a straight line...if there's wind...its not straight

yep...I just bought a 2005 19 ft maxum with trailer for 9250 bucks...the outdrive has just been serviced...tuesday morning it gets picked up in florida and brought to Savannah to be shipped over to Australia...the boat is worth high 30's here...and the dollar difference is only 10%...the shipping costs were pretty ugly tho
Feb 11, 2008 7:25 am EST in discussion Used boats are available at bargain prices
i have a 38 ft Silverton...and i have received two tickets for the same offence in the same year in two different countries...its ok to have someone on my bow as long as their feet are not danglin over the side...one ticket in Miami and one in Ontario Canada....and the danglers don't get the ticket...the captain does....of course
Feb 6, 2008 8:03 am EST in discussion Riding on the bow, what's the law?
its much easier for someone to buy a powerboat and turn the key and go...sailers usually have some experience before they go and purchase a sailboat...so sad to say but there's probably more clueless powerboaters out there...buttttttttttttt most powerboaters won't argue that i don't think...we just like to point out that when a sailboater is in the wrong they ALWAYS think they are in the right.
Geoffrey: nice boat...I really liked the joke you made when you called it a racer...hahahahahahaha... sailboat-racer...hahah...good one...haha....ummm...you were joking right?

Geoffrey Did you read Ben's post?? page 3...the problem is that he doesnt' want to share the water...and if thats the case i think hes going to have to suck it up...if i didnt want to share the water surely i would suck it up...didn't mean to offend you Geoffrey...if i offended Ben I have made the world a better place.
Mr.Buscemi- Seadoo's always jump my wake on the ottawa river, which i have no problem with...except the ones that after they jump they drive right in front of my bow and circle again for another jump..two of them were jumping my wake...one cut in front of the bow and hit his buddy who was about to cut in front...i almost ran over both of the idiots....came really close. if you said you were a Canadian SAILOR-they would definately believe you ;)
Feb 5, 2008 8:22 pm EST in discussion POWER -vs- SAIL .....
this forum has had some fun action i see...I'm a Canadian in Australia that used to live in the US...
1) Ben Coulter-people like you give sailboaters a bad name and are the reason why some power boaters don't like sailboaters...I hate when a Harley Davidson bike bombs by my car and i have the roof down...but i'm not going to knock him/her for enjoying it...so if you are on your boat and some cigarettte boat or "loud" powerboater goes by you...well just suck it up princess...or stick to your lakes that they are banned on...you won't hear anyone complain about missing you!!!! Personally cigarette boats aren't my style but i surely wouldn't knock someone for being different then me...but ole Ben says they "steal the peace and quiet" of the water...for about 10 seconds then its just you and your slow @$$ boat again...suck it up princess!!!
2) the person that said he can't wait for the day that the powerboats to drop 25% ...im guessing you don't keep in touch with boat prices...already happened!
3) I've been cut off by a sailboater under power and when i stopped and put my hands up he gave me the finger...then told me on the vhf that sailboaters have the right of way....insulted me...then told me to go learn the rules or dock my boat...and he had absolutely no sail up..he was quickly corrected...but i have had a powerboat or two do the same...and about a million seadoo's...i think we can all agree that seadooers are a cancer on the water?? I even have one...love it...but damn so many are so clueless...hmmm did i just contradict myself...lol...not knockin them just saying that ALOT of them are clueless.
4) tipping-i'm a canadian in australia that used to live in the US...i run around here in australia and when i don't tip i just tell them i'm american ;)
5) pollution-ummm checkmate...us powerboaters and the worst...i would be a idiot if i tried to argue that one.

lol...slowbutfast...good one! I recently bought a boat in Florida and thought it would be a great idea to bring it up to canada by water...over 10 000 in fuel...i could cry...my range is 200 miles on my 300 gallon tanks...over 1000 to fill them up...when you are paying that kind of money you really wish you were on a sailboat...at least i did...then i had engine problems and had to limp on one engine for quite a long way...8 knots...unlesss the wind and tide was against us...at times i thought i could jump overboard and swim faster...and we still passed sailboats! Unless i'm planning to take one around the world or become a very patient man...i'll stick with throwing everything i have out the exhaust pipe!

lol...i was drifting in 15-25 when i blew my damper plate...jessica's head was over the side of the boat...when i figured out what it was i limped back on one engine....couldn't believe how easy it was to go with the waves at 7-8 kt...like i say...im used to rivers...that trip was a HUGE learning experience
Jan 5, 2008 8:41 am EST in discussion Boating New Years Resolutions
lol that day in the Chesapeake was the only time on the whole trip where jessica wore a life jacket...when the bow would go down into a swell and the stern would go up, every once in awhile one of props would spin..i thought i was losing my tranny...but the thing was actually starting to come out of the water...when i took it slow jess would get sick...so we just went 15 mph into the waves...and hated every minute of it...10 hours later we drank ourselves to death in some small town
Jan 4, 2008 6:25 pm EST in discussion Boating New Years Resolutions
i was headin up the chesapeake with 25-30 kt winds coming at me and that was my worst boating experience yet...lol...poor jessica was crying...and i'm sure thats nothing compared to what most of you been in...but i'm from the river system in canada...just doesn't get ugly unless you are on a great lake.

I've been there before...just never with a boat...last year i dug around on the net and there's a lot of cool dives there...next time its the first place i'll go. I only had one wiring problem and it was a easy fix...although there is alot of unwanted wires still kicking around from all the old electronics.
If i ever catch air...i'm in alot of trouble ;) when i was headin up the Chesapeake i had a prop come out of the water quite a few times...it was pretty rough conditions...anything not strapped or bolted down exploded into pieces...including the cockpit fridge door
Jan 4, 2008 5:33 am EST in discussion Boating New Years Resolutions
i remember the area...pretty cool actually. Are you picking them up for the bank or just picking up deals? America is getting crushed right now....and its only going to get worse...problem is canada is going to follow...adn we are in a boom out west...but doesnt' matter..80% of all our exports go to you guys...so we are in trouble...hopefully Australia doesnt' get crushed...i'm testing the waters for importing american boats
Jan 3, 2008 8:26 pm EST in discussion Boating New Years Resolutions
Why do I have a boat? When i was a kid mom used to take us down to the beach and i would just stare at the boats...always been that way for me...and i had noooooo idea back then how much fun they are...this summer when i go back to canada i'll be living on mine...i like the lifestyle!! So much fun having a bunch of people tied up and having a few drinks...usually a few to many!
Fishing? every boat i have bought a fishing rod or two..never once have i or anyone else onboard my boats ever through a line overboard. this year maybe tho...in lake ontario

Jan 3, 2008 8:03 pm EST in discussion Boating New Years Resolutions
wanna talk fuel costs...i was just at a marina here in sydney yesterday and i could swear i saw prices over $2/litre for diesel...thats 8 bucks a gallon...now thats gotta suck When i bought my boat i had both engines ripped out along with the running gear...shafts rudders and props reconditioned and new drippless units put in. both tranny's rebuilt...new hot water heater...new 7kw generator...exhaust manifolds and risers...i did everything except rebuild the engines...which i'm now having done in canada..the damn thing is going to be brand new...better not break down now...didnt have any problems all the way to myrtle beach...but then the alternator belt went and a engine overheated and i had plenty of problems since...two damper plates blew...ON THE SAME SIDE...oh well..what can you do...boating is boating... my last boat i bought in buffalo NY and brought it to otttawa by water...400 miles or so...not one problem...sold it two years later without ever having to fix anything except a alternator...ahhhh i miss those days! I'm jealous of your location...really beginning to realise how bad we got it in canada with our short boating season...one of my biggest regrets was not making it to the keys with the boat before heading north with it
Jan 3, 2008 7:56 pm EST in discussion Boating New Years Resolutions
dont worry...they dont pay attention to me already ;) My plan is to stay here...this year im going to stick around for 5 months and come back right again after summer. The boating is awesome here...and my boat is sitting in winterland!
you're right..boats are cheap there...and they are expensive here...so i might work out pretty good.
i wouldn't want a 60 ft plus boat...not yet...i can barely afford the fuel on my 38..lol...i just wish it was over here....but i can't make sense of sending it to Australia after all the problems i had getting the damn thing to canada
Jan 3, 2008 6:52 pm EST in discussion Boating New Years Resolutions
lol...good one! the last person that told me they didn't have a heater in their house almost got a punch in the mouth...it was here in Australia...The Gold Coast...I'm from Canada...come here too escape the winter for a few months...i leave in a snowstorm wayyyyy below freezing...hang here for three months and when i get back...its still snowing!!! Realized last year that my three months here i have better weather then the whole combined 9 months in Canada...so my new years resolution-simple-buy a boat in Florida and have it shipped here to Australia...just a little one tho...looking at a 2005 21ft chaparral
Jan 3, 2008 5:50 pm EST in discussion Boating New Years Resolutions
