I have to go along with the backup plan and would like to add an "Adapt and Overcome" policy. Sometimes called a plan "B", it is essentially what to do when something doesn't go as planned. So have a battery operated VHF alongside the portable GPS next to the first aid kit surrounded by enough life jackets for everyone on board. Nuff said. Oh and don't forget the float plan and make sure you file it on shore and not with the person next to you at sea!
